Women in volunteerism for Women’s Month

As we celebrate Women’s Month, it is important that we do not only commend and celebrate individual success stories of women. We must also make it a point to stand by them and to support their advocacy while inspiring and encouraging others to do the same”, said UPLB Chancellor Jose V. Camacho in his welcome message on the first installment of the webinar series initiated by the UPLB Ugnayan ng Pahinungod.

To honor the women from all walks of life and acknowledge their achievements, a three-part webinar series entitled, “Mga Mukha ng Kababaihan: Si Maria, Juana at Melchora” was organized by UPLB Ugnayan ng Pahinungod in partnership with the UPLB Gender Center and UPLB Business Affairs Office in observance of the Women’s Month. These webinars focused on women in volunteerism, entrepreneurship, and health.

Yapak ni Maria, Yapak ng Pagboboluntirismo”, the first of the three webinars was held last March 21, 2022 with 104 participants who joined via Zoom and 17 viewers thru the Facebook Live. The webinar was divided into two parts. The first half presented an overview of volunteerism and where it is in the spectrum of women empowerment through the presentation of Ms. Ela Victoria F. Sarmago of the Philippines National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency. Ms. Arlene Mahinay of the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) Philippines Country Program on the other hand, highlighted the volunteering journey of VSO in the context of women empowerment and gender equality.

The second part of the event gave the participants an overview of the challenging yet fulfilling journey of the two (2) invited women volunteers. Ms. Maria Lourie Victor, Head of Indigenous Peoples Education Office, openly shared her experience in volunteer engagements in relation to gender and gender identity. The last speaker, Ms. Precious Leano of the Art Relief Mobile Kitchen also shared their group’s initiatives particularly during disasters.

Dr. Jennifer Mari S. Amparo, Director of the UPLB Business Affairs Office and Dr. Blesshe Querijero of the UPLB Institute of Biological Sciences were also invited to serve as reactors, with Director Maria Beatriz Inzon of the UPLB Office of Student Activities as the moderator.

The second installment of the webinar, “Negosyo ni Juana, Tagumpay sa Agrikultura at Pamalakaya”, spearheaded by the UPLB Business Affairs Office was held last March 28, 2022 via Facebook Live. While, the third and last webinar, “Melchora sa Panahon ng Pandemya: Mga Kwento ng mga Kababaihang Frontliners at Healthcare Workers”, lead by the UPLB Gender Center concluded the whole event of the three offices last March 31, 2022 in celebration of the 2022 National Women’s Month.
